The elegantly globular body rising from a short flat foot, the rounded sides carved with a variety of treasures and auspicious symbols, including a conch shell, a silver ingot, a fan, a brocade ball, ruyi mushroom, fish and jewellery against a diaper-pattern ground, the gently domed cover carved with further treasures, fitted box.

Weiqi was regarded as one of the four arts of the Chinese scholar, along with calligraphy (shu), painting (hua) and the qin. Associated with ideals of wisdom and self-cultivation, the game embodies values central to Chinese thoughts, particularly harmony, balance and strategic thinking. The present lot was used to store the black and white stones used in this game.
A cinnabar lacquer jar carved with the Eight Treasures, 16th century, is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei (acc.no.guqi000445) and illustrated in , Taipei, 2008, p.115, no.104.
Compare with a pair of carved cinnabar lacquer boxes and covers, late 16th/early 17th century, which was sold at Bonhams London, 5 November 2020, lot 102.
圓盒附蓋，盒內髹黑漆，蓋面與器身均錦地浮雕雜寶紋，小巧精緻。
圍棋與書、畫、琴並列為文人四藝。此道寄寓智慧與修身之理想，體現中華思想中和諧、平衡與謀略之核心價值。本品即為貯藏圍棋黑白棋子之用。
