Footnotes
清晚期 白玉福祿紋佩
The combination of the bat and gourd, as seen in the present lot, is a popular auspicious motif in Chinese art. The Chinese character for 'bat' is fu (蝠), while the word for 'gourd' is hulu (葫蘆). Together, they form the homophonous expression fulu(福祿), 'May you enjoy both blessings and wealth.' See a related white jade 'double gourd and bat' pendant, Qing dynasty, in the collection of the Hubei Provincial Museum, illustrated in Chinese Jades in Traditional Collection (中國傳世玉器全集), vol.6, Beijing, 2010, p.245.
See a related pale celadon jade 'bat and double gourd' group, 18th century, which was sold at Sotheby's London, 17 May 2019, lot 261.
