This bottle is, for the most part, a double layer, three-colour overlay. The inner pink layer forms the petals and parts of the leaves and rocks, while the outer layer of black and green accentuates the flower centres, the stems and the highlights on the leaves and rocks.
Unlike single layer multicolour overlay, in which the colours are applied as separate blobs using tubes or sticks, multilayer overlay is built up by dipping the base bottle in successive layers of colour. A five colour single layer bottle is relatively common, whereas a true five layer bottle is only rumoured to exist. In both cases the outer layers are carved and ground away to leave the design in relief against the inner colour, but dipping successive layers of different colours demands far greater control and forethought, and the results can sometimes be unpredictable. The colour of an outer layer may inevitably intrude into the design of an inner one, as seen in the present lot, where black appears at the tips of some of the daisy petals; whether by design or by chance, there is no way of knowing.
Curiously, three layers are visible at the base, where the green rocks are further highlighted in black, and the foot rim clearly reveals the pink, green and black in successive layers.
Black glass is often seen highlighting petals and leaves in this kind of multi-layer glass, for another bottle decorated similarly with pink flowers and black highlights, see , p.205, pl.141.
此瓶大體為雙層三色套料。內層粉紅料用以表現花瓣及部分葉片與山石，外層黑、綠二色則勾勒花蕊、枝莖，並點綴葉片與山石。
單層多色套料乃以料棒或料管將各色料分別點施於瓶身；多層套料則不同，係將胎瓶反覆蘸入不同顏色之料，逐層疊套而成。五色單層套料瓶較為常見，而真正的五層套料瓶則僅見於傳聞。兩者雖同樣須將外層料雕琢磨去，使紋飾以浮雕形式凸顯於內層底色之上，然逐層蘸套不同色料，所需之掌控與事先構思遠為精密，成品效果亦難盡在預料之中。外層色料難免滲入內層紋飾，如本品雛菊部分花瓣尖端即可見黑色，究屬有意為之抑或偶然所致，已無從考證。
饒有趣味的是，瓶底可見三層料色，綠色山石之上復以黑色點染；圈足亦清晰可見粉、綠、黑三色層層相疊。
此類多層套料鼻煙壺中，常以黑色料點綴花瓣及葉片，另一件同樣飾粉色花卉並以黑料點綴之例，見《區氏集壺精舍藏中國鼻烟壺》，頁205，圖版141。
