As well as refining the stonepaste and underglaze-painting innovations of previous centuries, Ottoman ceramicists championed the use of Armenian bole red. This so-called 'Iznik red' would be progressively joined by a range of greens, turquoises and manganese purples, diversifying the blue and white wares that predominated in early Iznik production.
