Japanese; of circular form, the lip and footrim of brass, the main and narrow sides flat, the neck cylindrical, the lip flat, the recessed flat foot surrounded by a protruding flat footrim, the bottle decorated with an inlaid design of iridescent shell, gold and silver foil on a black lacquer ground, depicting on each main side a fenghuang in flight, framed with a band of shell alternating triangles; the narrow sides, neck and outer footrim decorated with a formalized floral diaper design
Note: “This is considered one of the finest lac-burgaute bottles ever produced” (H. Moss).
