The hexagonal salt is painted in underglaze cobalt blue. The six facets alternate between figures in riverside landscapes and bamboo sprays. Two panels depict seated scholars, while a third shows a standing figure holding a small boat beside flowing water beneath rugged mountains. The remaining panels are decorated with elegant bamboo sprigs. The upper rim is encircled by a continuous floral scroll border, while the foot rim is decorated with a geometric hatched band. The scenes evoke the ideal of the scholar's retreat, with bamboo symbolising resilience, integrity, and moral virtue.
The unusual hexagonal form, standing on three short feet and with a wide circular aperture to the underside, identifies the vessel as a table salt or condiment holder. Such architectural forms are considerably less common than cylindrical examples and reflect the innovative repertoire of Transitional blue and white porcelain produced for both the domestic and export markets.
