匣鏡磨初出
盤珠走不停
煙橫雙鳥白
山法一螺青
may be loosely translated as:
Gathering autumn's radiance as though to make it linger,
Heaven and earth are contained within Lake Dongting.
The vast, level waters stretch clear into the distance,
A solitary moon hangs pale, round and luminous.
Like a mirror freshly polished and drawn from its case,
Like a pearl rolling ceaselessly upon a tray.
Across the mist fly two white birds,
While among the hills rises a single blue-green spiral.
The reverse inscribed:
木落天低岸
盧荒雪滿汀
涼波千萬頃
幽火兩三星
倚笛漁歌亮
推篷客夢醒
嫦娥邀帝子
何處會雲耕
may be loosely translated as:
Leaves fall as the sky hangs low above the shore,
Reeds lie desolate, like snow covering the islets.
Cool waves stretch across ten thousand acres,
While two or three distant lights gleam in the darkness.
Leaning on his flute, a fisherman's song rings clear;
Pushing open the boat's awning, a traveler wakes from his dream.
Chang'e invites the daughters of the Emperor—
Where might they meet amid the cloud-swept realm?
This Imperial transparent glass bottle appears to be exceptional in color, referred to as , West Lake water. No published example appears to exist of this color and kind, bearing elegant, minutely rendered calligraphy. Faceted bottles in this period reflect European influence, however adapted by the Chinese to showcase both the form and the content, in this case, the inscription carried on both faces. Compare this in shape to the J&J Collection bottle illustrated by Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, , The J & J Collection, Hong Kong, 1993, pp. 312-313, no. 185. Most known transparent bottles of facetted form are either red glass or occasionally blue in color. For a rare uninscribed bottle of this lime-green color see Alexander Brody, , Hong Kong, 1993, pp. 52-53 and 150-151, no. 52.
