If a condition report is provided to assist you with assessing the condition of the lot, it is for guidance purposes only. Such condition report may not refer to all faults, restoration, alterations, or adaptations because Sotheby's is not a professional conservator or restorer but rather a condition report is a statement of subjective, qualified opinion genuinely held by Sotheby's. For these reasons, any such condition report is not an alternative to taking your own professional advice regarding the condition of the lot. Prospective buyers should also refer to the Guide for Buyers at Auction which includes important notices concerning the type of property in this sale.

说明:In 1906, Hishida Shunso followed Okakura Kakuzo (1863–1913) to Izura on the coast of Ibaraki prefecture, alongside fellow artists Yokoyama Taikan (1868–1958) [see Lots 2046 and 2051], Shimomura Kanzan (1873–1930) [see Lot 2135], and Kimura Buzan (1876–1942). After a period of inactivity due partly to a lack of public appreciation and constant ridicule in the press, the artists of the Nihon Bijutsuin founded by Kakuzo had effectively been driven out of Tokyo. Yet this setback proved short-lived: settled in a studio perched above the ocean, the painters pursued their work in close proximity – the friendly rivalry among them becoming a productive spur to their art. It was in this setting that Shunso pressed forward with the moro-tai, or ‘hazy style’, a method of colour washes that dispensed with linework.
Here, moonlight breaks through the cloud illuminating wave and rock for a fleeting instant. Not long after painting this work, Shunso fell ill and returned to Tokyo. He went on to produce his masterpieces Fallen Leaves (1909) and Black Cat (1910) before his death in 1911 at the age of thirty-eight.
