See a related chair, densely carved with lotus, Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2002, p.66, no.55.
The unusually small scale of the present chair raises the possibility that it was intended for ceremonial rather than domestic use. Its elaborate five-clawed dragon decoration and throne-like form may suggest a symbolic seat associated with ancestral or religious display, perhaps intended to accommodate or represent an ancestral tablet rather than a living sitter. This possibility may be further supported by the Qianlong reign mark on the incised and gilt back. See a gold lacquered wood spirit throne and footrest with memorial tablet, c.1800, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2004, p.270, no.351.
The carving of the present lot is notable for its combination of Imperial and archaistic motifs. The central back panel is dominated by a five-clawed dragon amidst clouds, above crashing waves and rocky outcrops. The five-clawed dragon was closely associated with the emperor and Imperial authority, while the dragon above waves and mountains forms an established Imperial decorative vocabulary, evoking the ruler's dominion over the realm. See a bed carved with similar crashing waves against rocks, but beneath lotus, early Qing dynasty, illustrated in , Shenzhen, 2002, pp.4-5, no.2.
The clouds are auspicious, expressing the wish for all things to proceed 'as desired'. See related carving of clouds on a table, Qianlong, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in ., no.135. The lotus carved above the central panel is likewise an auspicious Buddhist motif associated with purity. The side panels and armrests are carved with highly stylised archaistic dragons, their angular bodies and scrolling forms derived from archaic bronzes, reflecting the Qing Court's antiquarian taste. See related carving of kui dragons on a bed, Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2002, p.18, no.12.
