The present lot is notable for the exceptionally fine quality of its painted decoration, particularly the finely rendered pairs of sinuous dragons, with carefully articulated scales and dynamic poses amidst scrolling clouds above crested waves. Although dragon designs are extensively employed in Qing decorative arts, they were not a common decorative motif in painted enamelware. According to the research of Xu Xiaodong, no examples of enamelware bearing dragon decoration produced in the Imperial workshops have yet been identified, and such motifs are also rare among Guangdong enamel wares. For further discussion and a painted enamel bowl decorated with dragons, Qianlong, in the collection of the Art Museum, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, see (清代廣東金屬胎畫琺琅:圖錄), Hong Kong, 2023, pp.172-173.
