Property from the Collection of Jon Eric Riis, Atlanta, Georgia
Provenance:
Property from the Collection of Jon Eric Riis, Atlanta, Georgia.
Comprising over 20 lots, this selection from the collection of Jon Eric Riis spans Chinese textiles and jade scholar's objects to Korean rank badges and paintings, assembled over decades of extensive travel across Asia.
Widely recognized as one of the nation's leading contemporary tapestry artists and a connoisseur of textiles, Riis developed a deep appreciation for ethnographic art during his childhood in Chicago, later formalizing his studies at The Art Institute of Chicago and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Following a 1970 Fulbright Scholarship to India to study indigenous textiles, he headed the Crafts Program at Georgia State University. After 25 years of creating major commissioned works for corporate and public spaces, Riis shifted his focus in the early 1990s entirely to his own fine art practice.
Today, his intricately woven tapestries, noted for their textured interplay of silk, metallic threads, and hand-stitched beadwork, are held in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery. His mastery of the medium was further recognized with a 2011 United States Artists (USA) Windgate Fellowship in Craft, an honor he traveled to Los Angeles to accept at the Getty Museum. This profound technical understanding of historic craftsmanship is evident throughout his personal collection. The property offered this season presents a unique opportunity to acquire Asian works of art vetted by the discerning eye of a master artist.
