The Maitri Collection
Indra, the Vedic king of gods and god of thunder and war, was renowned for slaying the serpent Vritra and releasing life-giving waters. With the rise of Buddhism, he was transformed into a dharma-protecting deity and lord of Trayastrimsa Heaven. He is shown seated in with his right arm resting on his knee in a relaxed pose. A lotus stalk rises to his left shoulder supporting a vajra. He wears a diaphanous patterned , beaded necklaces, and a crown. His face is gently modeled in a serene expression with a delicately incised third eye, downcast eyes and mouth set in a slight smile. A related gilded example attributed to the 16th century is held in the Rubin Museum of Art, New York (C2005.16.44; HAR 55467).
