Description:
China, six-character mark Yongzheng and of the period
D. 12,3 cm
Important Spanish private collection, assembled since the 1970s - Bowls in yellow and green colours with peach and magpie motifs were first produced in the Kangxi period and continued to be used throughout the Qing dynasty; see a green glazed bowl with Kangxi mark from this period in the Palace Museum in Taipei, illustrated in the "Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain", volume 1, Tokyo, 1980, plate 31. According to Chinese tradition, the magpie, xique (喜鵲), is a bird of happiness, xi (喜), and a messenger that brings good news, while the peach, ta (喜鵲), is a bird that brings good luck;while the peach, tao (桃), which is believed to grow in the enchanted garden of the Queen Mother of the Western Paradise, is a symbol of longevity. Together these symbols form the rebus motif "Shou shang jia xi", which means "happiness & longevity", making the bowl a suitable gift for a birthday celebration. Compare a äsimilar bowl with yellow ground and green glaze with "peach and magpie" motif, Yongzheng mark and period, illustrated by J. Ayers, Far Eastern Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1980, plate 210; and a pair in the Tokyo National Museum, published in the Catalogue of Old Oriental Ceramics, Tokyo, 1953, plate 212. - Restored break and short hairline to the rim
