The goddess Ambika occupies a unique position within the Jain pantheon and is venerated by both Jain and Hindu communities. She is depicted seated in lalitasana (royal ease), her body arranged in a graceful tribhanga (triple-flexed) pose. She holds her child and a mango, attributes that refer directly to the foundational legend in which a pious woman was reborn as the goddess Ambika. Together, they underscore her role as a compassionate mother and bestower of fertility, prosperity, and protection.
The sculptor has skillfully conveyed the elegant femininity and maternal benevolence for which Ambika is renowned, while the subtle curvature of her body and refined ornamentation exemplify the idealized aesthetic of medieval Indian devotional sculpture. Compare the treatment of the figure and especially the base with that of 12th-century bronze figures of Tara and Manjushri in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1987.142.346 and 1974.289.6).
