The jade mask, of mottled amber and beige tone with a concave reverse, may represent a human head. See possible prototypes of a jade human head-shaped ornament, Shang dynasty, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, and a human head-shaped ornament, Shang dynasty, in the collection of the Wuhan Museum, both illustrated in Chinese Jades in Traditional Collections (中國傳世玉器全集), vol.1, Beijing, 2010, pp.107-108.
The two other masks in this lot may have been inspired by tiger-mask ornaments of the Shijiahe Culture (石家河文化) (2500–2000 BC) which is associated with tiger worship.
