Footnotes
十八世紀 白玉象紋佩
The elephant is an auspicious symbol associated with peace, wisdom, strength, and good governance. Because the word for elephant (xiang, 象) is a homophone for 'auspiciousness' or 'appearance' in certain contexts and appears in numerous auspicious rebuses, elephant-shaped pendants were often worn as talismans to convey blessings for good fortune, stability, and prosperity.
See a related white jade 'elephant' pendant, late 18th century, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 3 June 2015, lot 3349.
