The sceptre of elongated convex form terminating in a quatrefoil head and decorated with an inlaid gold and silver design, the head with a central yinyang symbol encircled by the bagua ('Eight Trigrams'), the upper shaft decorated on both sides with an archaistic wave design, the front of the lower shaft with Daoist motif, flanking an inscription in seal script followed by Sun Shenxing zhiyong ('Made use of by Sun Shenxing'), the reverse of the shaft inscribed Tianqi renxu Zhang Aochun zhi ('Made by Zhang Aochun in the renxu year of the Tianqi reign'), flanked by an upper panel of the sun and moon and a constellation, and a lower panel of Daoist characters and symbols, the lower end drilled to hold a loose ring in copper, fitted box.

The inscription on the present sceptre reading , which may be translated as 'its hook has no contrivance; it is upright without giving injury; it may accompany singing and dancing; if it disapproves, it will break; it is an implement of a (man of virtue). Inscribed by Zhao Xingnan, use by Sun Shenxing'.
It is exceedingly rare to have sceptres bearing the Zhang Aochun mark. A closely related example, also inscribed for the use of Sun Shenxing, is in the Royal Ontario Museum of Archaeology, Toronto, illustrated by Sheila Riddell, , London, 1979, p.148, fig.137.
柄身正面錯銘文：「其鉤無鐖，廉而不劌，以歌以舞，以弗若是折，維君子之器也。趙星南銘。孫慎行執用。」
如意帶有「張鼇春製」款者極為罕見。一件亦銘為孫慎行所用之例，現藏多倫多皇家安大略博物館，見Sheila Riddell，《Dated Chinese Antiquities: 600-1650》，倫敦，1979年，頁148，圖137。
