Footnotes
十八/十九世紀 白玉雕童子 一組四件
The present lot draws on auspicious imagery, in which boys act as carriers of symbolic wishes for prosperity and continuity. The figure standing on an ingot alludes to wealth and advancement, the accompanying flag bearing the character 令 (ling) suggesting 'by decree' or sanctioned good fortune, together implying prosperity granted by authority or destiny. The boy with a cat on a large leaf evokes domestic harmony and longevity, as the cat (貓 mao) forms a rebus with mao (耄), implying long life. The child with a ribboned ball references play, vitality, and the binding of good fortune. The boy with a bat alludes to victory and success, as the bat, through its link to his homophone fu (福, fortune), reinforces themes of happiness and good fortune.
