Signed with a dedication to Huang Beishou (1913-2000), dated lunar year wuwu (1978), with six seals of the artist: Dafeng tang, Zhang Yuan zhi yin, Daqian jushi, moye jingshe, chun chang hao, and qian qian qian, the outer titleslip inscribed by the recipient Huang Beishou, with one collector's seal Huang Beishou Cang.

According to the inscription, the present work was painted by the artist in 1978, around two years after Zhang Daqian had settled at Moye Jingshe in the Shilin district of Taipei. The term "kaixiang" refers to the pilgrimage rites of incense-offering in worship of Mazu.
Nanhai was an important center of Mazu devotion, and the Hokkien people placed great importance on clan ties. As an elder of the Wong (Huang) Family Association of America, Huang Beishou's request for this painting may well have coincided with the annual pilgrimage rites held in the third lunar month (observed without a fixed date each year, with the timing of the procession's departure and return determined instead through the divination practice of casting moon blocks), hence the present inscription.

The estate of Huang Beishou (Chinese, 1899-1983), San Francisco, California.
Huang Beishou was born in Nanhai, Guangdong province, in 1913. A cousin of the celebrated painter Huang Junbi, he later became a prominent patriotic overseas Chinese community leader active in San Francisco from the mid-to late twentieth century. He served as an advisor to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco, and together with Huang Renjun and Huang Jinbo, co-founded the Wong (Huang) Family Association of America, an organization dedicated to uniting and supporting Huang-surname clan members across the United States.
An avid collector, Huang amassed a significant holding of works by Zhang Daqian, Pu Ru, and Huang Junbi, which reflected both his connoisseurship and his close personal ties to this circle of émigré artists. He was married to Ms. Lin Liting.
