This manuscript cover is carved with four celestial apsaras dancing within a continuous scrolling vine, their gilded bodies adorned with jewelry and flowing scarves, the figure at right playing a flute. The lively figures and densely curling foliage reflect the strong Nepalese influence on Tibetan manuscript carving.
Compare the figural treatment and foliate ornament with a Tibetan late 13th-14th century manuscript cover in the MacLean Collection (Brown, Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection, 2012, pp.118-123, cat. no. 26).
