Together with three period photo albums assembled by Edwin Griggs Adams, which include photographs of family, friends and associates during his time in China, Chinese institutions and architecture for westerners in Northern China, including construction of the main train station in Beijing, and two printed announcements for the death of the empress dowager Cixi and the Guangxu emperor.

Edwin Griggs Adams was an American civil engineer and educator. Born in Lansingburgh, New York, on August 23, 1879, he studied at Troy Academy before earning his civil engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1891. He began his career in bridge engineering with the Pennsylvania Steel Company and the Union Bridge Company (1891–1897). In 1897, Adams traveled to China, where he was appointed Professor of Civil Engineering at Peiyang University in Tianjin—the second faculty member recruited by the institution. During his tenure prior to the boxer rebellion (1897–1900), he played a key role in advancing engineering education and contributed to major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Beijing railway station. He returned to China in 1902 as a partner in the firm of Adams & Knowles to undertake construction work in northern China and later in Beijing. At that time he also worked actively with Herbert Hoover, prior to Hoover's being elected president. Adams returned to America in 1910,
