上世纪二十年代，郎静山任职上海《申报》时，常于夜间在报馆写字作画，并融入海上画家圈，与吴湖帆交情尤深。两人不仅切磋摄影与画理、合力创作，吴湖帆更常为郎氏的集锦摄影提供建议。此幅《临流独坐》即为吴湖帆画稿的灵感来源，正如郎氏自述：“天台为浙省风景区，方广寺石梁飞瀑可谓全山精华……湖帆曾以此本写画。”本作于1938至1948年间屡获国际瞩目，不仅入选1944至1945年美国摄影学会39城巡回展，更斩获1937年琉森摄影沙龙银奖及1938年打比铁路摄影沙龙铜奖，奠定了郎静山的国际摄影地位。
