Of circular form, the cover deeply carved through layers of red and black lacquer with a central stylised flowerhead surrounded by pommel scroll, the straight sides of the box similarly decorated, the base lacquered black, Japanese wood box.

Florence (1920-2018) and Herbert Irving (1917-2016) were distinguished American philanthropists and visionary collectors of Asian art. Over five decades, they assembled a world-class collection renowned for its exceptional Chinese lacquerware, jade, and archaic bronzes. Notably, the couple donated over a thousand artefacts to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where a dedicated wing was built in their honour.
Black lacquer boxes carved with pommel-scroll designs from the Yuan dynasty are particularly rare. 佛羅倫斯（1920–2018）與赫伯特·歐雲（1917–2016）（歐雲伉儷）乃美國著名慈善家，亦為極具遠見之亞洲藝術收藏家。二人積五十年之功，建立世界級珍藏，以中國漆器、玉器及高古青銅器見稱。尤值稱道者，夫婦二人捐贈逾千件文物予紐約大都會藝術博物館，該館特設專館以誌其名。
蓋盒形制扁圓，平頂直壁，呈蔗段式。通體髹黑漆，施剔犀工藝。盒身及蓋面作如意卷雲紋，雲頭逐層拱繞，朵朵相連，及至中央，卷紋微縮成五瓣，狀如花蕊。
