A sturdily potted deep bowl with rounded sides, raised on a slightly elevated foot ring, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a scene of Ba Xian Zhu Shou (八仙祝壽, The Eight Immortals Offering Birthday Congratulations). The exterior depicts the Eight Immortals, each accompanied by their characteristic attribute, within a rocky river landscape with pine trees. Shoulao, the God of Longevity, is shown seated upon a crane soaring gracefully above the tranquil waters, reinforcing the auspicious symbolism of longevity.
The interior is decorated at the centre with a medallion depicting a mountainous river landscape with a small cottage and a boat. The rim is encircled by a border of stylised pine needles. The recessed base bears a fang ding (方鼎) mark within a double circle.
The theme of Ba Xian Zhu Shou combines the Eight Immortals with Shoulao, the God of Longevity, expressing wishes for long life, prosperity, and happiness. Such auspicious compositions were particularly favoured on porcelain made for birthday celebrations and other festive occasions during the late Ming and Qing dynasties.
