註：林風眠早習西畫，創作好取方型構圖。七十年代末，他亦偶引入長方形橫構圖，將戲劇人物、風景等題材，延展為四呎整紙畫幅。
蘆塘飛雁之靈感，源於他在西湖邊的生活記憶，衍用古典水墨的水岸構圖，一江如素練迤邐，遠山似青黛暈染，恍若清曉時分，群雁低掠葦塘，劃破四野岑寂，橫幅將山水空間無限延宕，意境杳渺。灰、白、藍、綠色調子，呈現抒情式東方韻味，較早期之黑白灰更為明亮，或暗示畫家晚年心境變遷。
