The highly eccentric design of the present dish is known in Holland as 'Cuckoo in the House'. Numerous variations in designs are known, for example, see a dish, Kangxi, circa 1700, illustrated in D.S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, p.44, no.10, where it is noted that the aster sprays closely mirror those on cups and saucers from the Vung Tau cargo of circa 1695.
