Finely cast in the form of a miniature shrine, this image presents Chintamani Lokeshvara and belongs to a type of votive lamp frequently found in both Hindu and Buddhist Nepalese temples. The principal figure stands beneath the wish-fulfilling gem tree, flanked by two goddesses and two further male attendants. Below, yakshas are seated with heads upturned, reaching to gather the gems that fall from the branches. The tree, its foliage richly and rhythmically rendered, also shelters two pairs of celestial figures.
For the complete form of such a lamp, see Pal, Art of Nepal, 1985, p. 141, no. S71. Compare two closely related examples (HAR 10008 & 19655).
