The image of the crowned and jewelled Buddha conveys spiritual sovereignty and reflects a long artistic tradition traceable to Indian Buddhist art as early as the 6th century, particularly in regions such as Swat and Kashmir. This iconography became especially prominent during the Pala Dynasty (c. 8th–12th century). From there, the concept spread across China and Southeast Asia via pilgrimage and trade routes. A Pala bronze crowned Buddha discovered in Thailand, believed to have arrived in the early 12th century and now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1990.121a), attests to this cultural transmission.
It reached a distinctive expression during the Ayutthaya period (1350–1767), one of the most prosperous and powerful states in Southeast Asia. One interpretation identifies it as Shakyamuni assuming a cosmic form to convert the king Jambupati. Another interprets it as Maitreya residing in Tushita heaven, awaiting his future descent into the world.
A notable feature is the positioning of both hands raised in identical gestures, a convention unique to Southeast Asian Buddhist art. Believed to originate in the Mon-Dvaravati cultures which flourished between the 7th and 9th centuries, it became firmly established within the canon of Thai sculpture.
The conical is formed of diminishing, tiered ceremonial umbrellas that closely echo the crowning elements of Thai stupas. This distinctive motif reinforces the image's symbolic association with both sacred authority and royal power. The jewellery may be compared with a Buddha in The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (acc. no. 54.2554).
