The circular cover exquisitely carved in relief through three layers of colour with a large central chun ('spring') character enclosing a roundel of the seated figure of Shoulao with a deer under a pine tree, all emerging from a basket containing auspicious symbols, flanked by a pair of five-clawed dragons amidst cloud scrolls, the sides of the box and cover finely decorated with cartouches of scholars and attendants in landscapes alternating with the babao ('Eight Treasures'), all reserved on an elaborate diaper ground, the interior and base lacquered black, fitted box.

The form and decoration of these impressive -character lacquer boxes derive from Jiajing prototypes, reflecting the enduring association of the character (春), meaning 'spring', with longevity and renewal. See a Jiajing mark and period example from the Qing Court Collection, now preserved in the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in , Taipei, 2008, p.97, no.87.
The Qianlong Emperor held these boxes in high regard, commissioning their production on multiple occasions. According to Yang Boda, an order for twelve boxes was issued to the Imperial workshops in 1758, with the inscription 'Shouchun Baohe', which can be translated as 'Precious Box of Spring and Longevity' (壽春寶盒), engraved onto the pieces.
Qianlong period examples, such as the present lot, are extant in the Imperial collections in Beijing and Taipei; see an example in the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in , Taipei, 1981, no.67; and in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in (Complete Collection of Classified Chinese Arts), vol.8, Beijing, 1989, pl.172. Further examples can be found in important collections such as the Avery Brundage Collection in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, illustrated by Sir H.Garner in , London, 1979, pl.90; and another exhibited by the Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and the Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, , Hong Kong, 1993, no.76, later sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 October 2014, lot 3224.

蓋盒形制扁圓，弧壁內收，呈蒸餅式。通體作錦地剔彩，備紅、黃、綠三色。蓋頂隨形開光，錦地上雕聚寶盆，奇珍琳琅，光焰四射。「春」字居中懸浮，字裏再開一光，見壽老與鹿盤坐松下；兩側又雕穿雲游龍，俯身仰首，同望壽老。蓋、盒側各開四屏，剔紅山水人物，屏外飾八吉祥以間隔。
此類寶盒承嘉靖朝漆盒之形制與紋飾。參考清宮舊藏一件嘉靖款例，現存台北故宮博物院，見《和光剔彩：故宮藏漆》，台北，2008年，頁97，編號87。乾隆皇帝對此類寶盒甚為鍾愛，屢次下令製作。據楊伯達研究，乾隆二十三年（1758年）曾命宮廷作坊製作十二件，並刻「壽春寶盒」於器上。
乾隆朝例子，如本品者，今存於北京及台北兩地故宮，見《故宮漆器特展》，台北，1981年，編號67，及《中國美術全集》，卷8，北京，1989年，圖版172。其他重要收藏中亦可見類似壽春寶盒，如舊金山亞洲藝術博物館Avery Brundage收藏一例，著錄於Harry Garner爵士，《Chinese Lacquer》，倫敦，1979年，圖版90；另有一件曾展於《中國漆藝二千年》，香港東方陶瓷學會及香港中文大學文物館，香港，1993年，編號76；後售於香港蘇富比，2014年10月7日，拍品編號3224。
