Ink and Pigments on paper, mounted as a hanging scroll and framed under glass. Depicted is a powerful, bearded deity with a fierce gaze and a halo: Tsiang T'in Sai (also known as the Celestial Master Zhang or Zhang Daoling), one of the most important protective and exorcistic deities in the Yao pantheon. His brilliant red robes feature circular symbols of the Eight Trigrams (Bagua) and dragons. He rides on his powerful tiger. In the background, he is flanked by two long swords, which he uses to drive away evil forces. Two square red seals appear at the top edge. Below, smaller guardian figures and attendants in martial armor assist him. An ink written inscription within a rectangular cartouche, bearing a Tongzhi date.

Such scrolls were used by shamans of the Yao minority during important rituals such as funerals, healing ceremonies or exorcisms. They served as temporary dwellings for spirits and deities to restore balance in the universe
