Footnotes
The present landscape of imposing scale features towering bluffs rendered with vigorous axe-cut texture strokes and an exceptionally rich array of staffage figures and animals. Drawing upon motifs from different periods of the Chinese art history, the artist weaves together a remarkably cohesive pictorial world. Waterfowl painted in the manner of Zhao Danian, peculiar rocky mountains and buffalo-herding scenes inspired by Southern Song paintings, and horse-washing scenes recalling Yuan dynasty precedents. There are also auspicious imageries such as rams and flocks of birds among pine trees. A village woman portrayed instructing her son is set in intriguing contrast to fashionable urban ladies in qipao taking a nap by a window. Splendid palace-like architecture is bustled with visitors, while secluded hermit lodges lie hidden amid dense bamboo groves. Through these carefully orchestrated juxtapositions, the artist harmoniously captures both the vitality of worldly activity and the quiet pleasure of everyday life, creating a scene that is at once animated and serene.
Cai Heting, courtesy name Yiyuan and sobriquet Zhenshi Sanren, was a native of Taijiang, Fuzhou. Demonstrating extraordinary artistic talent from an early age, he founded an advertising company at the age of fifteen and already participated in stage design projects in Shanghai by the age of twenty-one. He later joined the Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy Society, where he became acquainted with leading artists like Zhang Daqian, and soon held his first solo exhibition. Following 1949, he remained in Shanghai for a while, working as an illustrator before relocating to Xi'an. There, he served as a committee member of Shaanxi Opera Research Society, and as a stage designer for the Shaanxi Qinqiang Experimental Theater Troupe. Cai's extensive experience in stage design greatly enriched his artistic visions and enabled him to master an exceptionally wide range of subjects. Whether depicting figures, landscapes, birds, beasts, flowers, insects, fish, fruits or vegetables, he rendered each with striking sensitivity and refinement. His paintings are distinguished by their bold and inventive compositions, animated by a wealth of vivid and engaging details that imbue his works with exceptional vitality.
