Footnotes
清乾隆 約一七八五年 墨彩桑特海峽戰役圖盌
This rare bowl is one of a small group made to celebrate the significant naval battle in the Caribbean between the British and the French that took place 9th-12th April, 1782. The maritime scene is taken from a 1783 engraving by Francis Chisholm and John Paltrow after a painting by Robert Dodd (1748-1815).
The satirical scene is after an engraving titled 'Politeness', which is known in several versions and is attributed to James Gillray (1756-1815) depicting confrontations between national stereotypes and originally published in 1779.
See other examples of this pattern in Hervouët & Bruneau, , 1986, p.49, no.2.38; The Royal Maritime Museum at Greenwich; and Sargent, 2012, , nos.175,328-329, with more related works listed.
