The Buddha seated in dhyānāsana upon a separately carved hardwood stand, the hands held in dhyāna mudrā above the lap, wearing a simply draped monastic robe falling in elegant folds over both shoulders and gathered around the crossed legs and the hems of the robe finely engraved with floral scrolls, the serene face cast with downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows, flanked by elongated pendulous earlobes, and surmounted by tightly curled hair centered with a prominent uṣṇīṣa, the chest incised with a svastika (wan) emblem, the surface richly gilded throughout.
9in (22.9cm) high
(fitted wood stand).
Footnotes
明十六/十七世紀 鎏金銅阿彌陀佛坐像
Compare a closely related figure sold at Sotheby's New York, 10 September 2019, lot 313, similarly cast with tightly curled hair, an exposed chest engraved with a wan, and robes chased with lotus-scroll decoration. Also compare another Ming gilt-bronze figure of Amitabha sold in the same sale, lot 306, exhibiting the restrained modelling, serene facial expression, and monastic attire. Further related examples include a pair of Ming gilt-bronze figure of Amitabha buddhas sold at Christie's New York, 13 September 2019, lot 852, and another sold at Christie's New York, 19 September 2025, lot 898, both demonstrating the enduring popularity of this iconographic type and the refined engraving of the robe hems and harmonious proportions characteristic of mid-to-late Ming Buddhist bronzes.
