Vaishravana, Guardian King of the North, protector of the Buddhist teachings and deity of wealth, dominates this elaborate composition. Seated astride a white snow lion with a green mane, he holds the victory banner in his raised right hand and the jewel-spitting mongoose in his left. He appears as a warrior-king in full armor, surrounded by his extensive retinue. The Eight Lords of the Horses, his mounted yaksha generals, are arranged along either side, each within an individual architectural pavilion. At lower right, one horseman turns away from the viewer, revealing the shield carried on his back. The Eight Great Nagas and the Seven Symbols of Royalty are represented among the smaller figures surrounding Vaishravana.
At the top center is wrathful Vajrapani, flanked by the three-faced, eight-armed Ushnishavijaya and Amitayus. Directly below Vaishravana are Yellow Jambhala at center, Black Jambhala to the viewer's left and Vasudhara to the right. Four standing goddesses holding arrows appear below this group. At the bottom center is Machen Pomra, a mountain deity closely associated with Amdo, Eastern Tibet.
The painting's brilliant palette, densely arranged landscape and extensive architectural setting exemplify the regional Amdo style. The tiered roofs, projecting eaves, red pillars and decorative textiles establish a strong architectural framework around the mounted retinue. Saturated greens and blues define the wooded landscape, while the flame-edged halo surrounding Vaishravana reflects Chinese-derived pictorial elements found in Tibetan painting.
The lavish use of gold is one of the painting's defining features. Vaishravana's entire body is rendered in gold, creating a luminous central presence against the saturated greens, reds and deep blues of the surrounding landscape and architecture. Fine linear detailing defines his facial features, jewelry, elaborate armor and layered garments. Gold extends throughout the composition, filling many of the surrounding deities and mounted figures and highlighting halos, ritual implements and architectural details.
An important early precedent is the 15th-century Vaishravana in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2021.290), which similarly depicts the armored deity upon his snow lion accompanied by the Eight Lords of the Horses. Compare also an 18th-century Vaishravana formerly in the Rubin Museum of Art (P1998.22.1), with its similarly elaborate presentation of Vaishravana and his retinue.
