Surya, the sun god, stands on his chariot, flanked by two bow-bearing devotees and a diminutive charioteer at the front, guiding the horses. The composition is enclosed within an elaborate torana arch of traditional form with scrolling foliage and makara heads emitting large foliate elements; compare with a 14th–15th century Nepalese painting of Chandra, the moon god, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1981.465). The chariot recalls the form of large wooden processional chariots characteristic of the Kathmandu Valley. A related depiction of Surya is seen in a later inlaid gilt-metal devotional plaque, Nepal, Newari, 19th/20th century, sold at Bonhams, San Francisco, 21 June 2011, lot 8192A. Also see related 18th-century shrines in the British Museum, London (1880.373 & 1896,0309.1).
