Qianlong seal mark and of the period
The pear-shaped body of rectangular section rising from a gently spreading foot to a quatrefoil rim, the waisted neck set with a pair of square tubular handles, the front and back belly each moulded with a raised peach-form panel, overall covered in a rich purple-red transmutation glaze streaked with mottled blue, thinning to a light beige colour at the rim and along the edges, the base incised with a six-character seal mark and further applied with a greyish glaze with russet flecks, fitted box.

The inspiration for the flambé glaze can be attributed to the splashed wares of the Song dynasty. However, this specific red glaze, created from copper with additional lead content, was notably unstable and challenging to regulate within the kiln environment, leading to the highest failure rate among all Chinese glazes. It was only through the development of advanced technical proficiency during the Qing period, particularly during the Qianlong reign, that successful production of flambé-glazed porcelain was achieved, thereby emphasising the exceptional quality and rarity of the present lot.
A number of examples of this type of vase are in museum and private collections: one in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in , vol.II, London, 1915, pl.23, fig.1. 本壺所施之窯變釉可溯至宋代鈞窯。由於釉料中除銅外,還含有微量鉛等呈色元素,於窯中極不穩定,難以控制,為諸釉中失敗率最高者。直至清代,尤以乾隆朝,技術臻於成熟,方得成功燒造窯變釉瓷,足見本品之罕有。
