Private English Collection, acquired from Joyce Gallery in 2007
The image vividly portrays the imposing presence of Lei Gong, the Lord of Thunder, depicted with the head of a bird and the body of a man. Featuring a sharp, hooked beak and wide, piercing eyes, the deity wears a fierce and formidable expression. With a thunder hammer raised high in his right hand and a thunder chisel firmly grasped in his left, the sculpture captures the dramatic instant before he unleashes thunder across the heavens and the earth.
In Taoist and folk religious traditions, Lei Gong and Dian Mu (Mother of Lightning) are divine consorts who govern thunder and lightning. Under the supreme authority of the Jade Emperor, they work alongside Feng Bo (God of Wind) and Yu Shi (Master of Rain) to summon clouds, bring forth rain, punish evil, and uphold righteousness. See a wooden Lei Gong statue in the collection of the National Museum of Taiwan History (2017.001.0962).
