A double-gourd vase with a slightly everted rim, painted in vibrant tones of underglaze cobalt blue. The upper section is decorated with three characteristic stylised tulip sprays. The upper gourd depicts three scholars surrounded by stacks of books in a mountainous landscape with trees and foliage. The slender waist is encircled by a band of stylised leaf motifs, while the shoulder is decorated with a band of chrysanthemum garlands. The larger lower gourd is painted with a continuous fenced rocky landscape depicting a gathering of young scholars. One side shows four scholars accompanied by an attendant holding a horse, while the other depicts four further scholars arriving to join the gathering. The subject may be understood as a literati gathering or scholarly outing, a refined theme associated with friendship, literary cultivation and elegant leisure. In the absence of an inscription, the scene is best described conservatively as a scholars’ gathering rather than identified as a specific historical episode.
