Cabinets of this type belong to the category of duobaoge (多寶格), literally 'cabinets for numerous treasures', which emerged during the early Qing dynasty and may have developed from the cabinets of the Ming period. Qing palace archives more commonly refer to such furniture as (博古書格), or 'cabinets for antiquities and books', reflecting their dual function: the upper shelves were intended for the display of precious antiquities, scholar's objects and curios, while the lower compartments housed books, albums and scrolls. While individual examples of this type are rare, the survival of a matching pair is particularly exceptional.
The popularity of the form reached its zenith during the mid Qing period, when the Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors' passion for collecting and connoisseurship profoundly influenced Court taste. The seemingly irregular arrangement of shelves and compartments was carefully conceived to accommodate objects of varying forms and sizes while creating a harmonious visual composition. Such cabinets served not merely as furniture, but as curated displays of learning, refinement and cultural attainment. An illustration of their use may be seen in one of the celebrated paintings commissioned for Prince Yong (the future Yongzheng Emperor), now in the Palace Museum, Beijing (Gu6458-1/12), which depicts a lady seated in a study surrounded by related display cabinets filled with antiquities and books.
Slightly earlier examples from the Yongzheng period were often executed in hardwood and embellished with black lacquer and gilt decoration. See, for example, a display cabinet decorated with black lacquer and gilt, Yongzheng, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2002, p.254, no.216.
While examples executed in hardwood are more frequently seen, cabinets carved through layers of cinnabar lacquer are considerably rarer and would have represented furnishings of exceptional expense and craftsmanship. The intricate carving covering virtually every exposed surface reflects the technical virtuosity of Qing lacquer workshops and the sumptuous decorative aesthetic associated with the finest decorative arts, particularly of the Qianlong period. See, for example, a carved lacquer multi-partition cabinet decorated with mottled bamboo patterns and representations of antiques, Qianlong, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2002, p.267, no.226. Compare also with a related carved cinnabar lacquer cabinet, 1720-1780, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, (acc.no.FE.56 to B-1983).
