'Bamboo' seal: Collection of Huang Yunchao, late Qing/Republic period
Huang Yunchao, courtesy name Yanshan, was a native of Nanhai, Guangdong Province, and was active during the late Qing and Republic periods. He was a noted collector and connoisseur of Chinese paintings and stone rubbings. The celebrated Jiuchenggong Liquan Ming (Inscription on the Sweet Spring in the Jiucheng Palace), now in the collection of the Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (accession no. 1992.0024, gift of Dr. J.S. Lee's Bei Shan Tang), was once in Huang Yunchao's collection. Alson formerly in his collection was the painting Dutou Lianying by the renowned Ming dynasty artist Tang Yin (1470-1524) in the collection of the Shanghai Museum.
The identity of the owner of the pair of square seals, whose studio name was "Tenghua Yin Guan," remains uncertain, as several Qing dynasty scholar-officials adopted this studio name. Among them, the most prominent was Liang Zhangju (1775-1849), who named his retirement studio in Fuzhou "Tenghua Yin Guan" after leaving official service. The title of his poetry anthology also features this studio name. Other known users include Yang Kui (1760-1804), a Grand Council official during the Qianlong reign, and Chen Qiren (1836-1903), a secretary in the Ministry of Justice, both of whom titled their literary anthologies Tenghua Yin Guan.
