Crafted from prised zitan, this table stands as a testament to the luxurious material culture of the Qing dynasty. Revering zitan as the most prestigious of all timbers during the Ming and Qing eras, Imperial patrons and wealthy literati prized the timber for its extraordinary density, durability, and fine, subtly variegated grain. Over a prolonged period of exposure and careful handling, the wood develops an attractive, deep, and lustrous purplish-black sheen that is highly sought after.
Compare other examples with similar geometric lattice work, including a huanghuali canopy bed, 16th/17th century, which was sold at Christie's New York, 16 September 1998, lot 81, and again at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 5 April 2015, lot 2867.
