Skilfully carved to the cover with a central medallion enclosing three Buddhist lions chasing a brocade ball, encircled by bands of shou characters and ruyi heads, further carved in high relief to the curved sides with eight figures of foreigners holding auspicious object and engaging in various activities, all reserved on a dense diaper ground, the base carved with eight mythical beasts and auspicious animals, fitted box.

The theme depicting eight foreign figures and their representations on lacquerware is rare. Typically, foreigners are portrayed within scenes of treasure tributary, as exemplified by the depiction on a cinnabar lacquer cabinet from the Qing Court collection, now preserved in the Palace Museum, Taipei (acc.no. zhongqi 000042).
The decoration of three Buddhist lions chasing a brocade ball can be observed on other cinnabar lacquerwares dated to the Qianlong period. For example, see a rectangular box and cover from the Qing Court collection, now preserved in the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in , Taipei, 2008, p.132, no.130; see another circular box in the Muwen Tang collection, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2010, pp.306-307, no.111.

本品蓋側飾八名胡人，各持吉祥之物，姿態互異。此類紋樣頗為罕見，多見於職貢圖中，如清宮舊藏一件清代剔紅小櫃上所繪之例，現存台北故宮博物院（館藏編號：中漆000042）。而蓋面所飾之三獅戲球紋飾，可見於乾隆朝其他剔紅器，如清宮舊藏一件剔紅馴獅寶盒，現存台北故宮博物院，見《和光剔彩：故宮藏漆》，台北，2008年，頁132，編號130；及沐文堂藏一件剔紅三獅滾球紋圓盒，載於《沐文堂收藏全集：中國漆藝》，香港，2010年，頁306至307，編號111。
