Footnotes
西藏 十三/十四世紀 銅鎏金八瓣蓮花紋圓形飾片
Provenance
John and Karina Stewart Collection, since 2000s
This Buddhist ritual object takes the form of an openwork roundel comprising an eight-petalled lotus enclosed by beaded borders, with a foliate and jewel-like motif at the center. Two holes and a break in the border on the reverse suggest that it was once mounted on a support, possibly for ritual or devotional display. The eight-petalled lotus is a recurring auspicious motif in Himalayan Buddhist art, while the beaded borders reflect the vocabulary of Pala-period sculpture. A Yuan-dynasty silver cup stand in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2007.187) features similarly shaped lotus petals, though here incorporating the Eight Auspicious Symbols (ashtamangala). A late 13th-century Japanese Wheel of the Buddhist Law (rinpo) in the same collection (2015.300.296) combines an eight-spoked wheel with an eight-petalled lotus center and a beaded border. A 14th century Tibetan gilt bronze stupa canopy with a roundel of petals and a beaded border sold in Bonhams London, 15 May 2025, lot 159.
