The present covered box deftly incorporates the elegant mallow form and the Daoist trigram motif, which gained popularity since the 16th century. Compare a small Ming dynasty vase similarly decorated with trigrams in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc.no.29.110.83).
