The present rock crystal brushpot is carved in imitation of a bamboo segment, a form long favoured in scholar's table objects for its associations with resilience and the cultivated life. The surface is further enlivened with two archaistic clambering in high relief, its sinewy body reflecting the eighteenth century Qing taste for revived Han and ancient bronze-inspired forms. Such playful combinations of naturalism and artifice are characteristic of courtly production in the Qianlong period, when artisans frequently exploited the visual ambiguities of hardstones to evoke other materials: here rock crystal rendered to suggest both water-worn bamboo and the elegance of archaic jade carving. See a related rock-crystal brushpot carved as a gnarled pine tree with crane and bamboo, Qing dynasty, illustrated in , Taipei, 1990, p.165.
