Compare the three-ridged jade tube with two triangular jade tubes, Songze Culture to early Liangzhu Culture, 3900-2600 BC, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Select Jade in the Palace Museum: The Spirit of Jade, I (故宮玉器精選全集:玉之靈 I), Taipei, 2019, p.360.
The mythical beasts depicted on either side of the present lot may be identified as a dragon and phoenix, an auspicious pairing traditionally associated with love, harmony, and marital felicity. Together, these complementary creatures symbolise the harmonious union of yin and yang, embodying the balance of opposing yet interdependent forces.
Compare with a related archaistic yellow and russet jade bi, Qing dynasty, which was sold at Christie's New York, 18 March 2009, lot 438.
