Hammer Galleries was founded by industrialist and philanthropist, Armand Hammer and his brother Victor in 1928. In the early 1930s, the gallery rose to prominence when it became the first in the west to exhibit the Russian Imperial Easter Eggs by celebrated court jeweller Karl Fabergé. The gallery represented the historic and vast art collection of William Randolph Hearst, the largest of its time, and works from the famous collection of J.P. Morgan.
Matilda Geddings Gray was heir to her father's fortune and took over the family's Louisiana businesses in oil, gas and agriculture as well as timber. Philanthropy played a key role in her life, and during the Second World War she shipped over 110,000kg of rice to France and England due to food shortages. In recognition for her philanthropy she was awarded the Order of the British Empire, the French Legion of Honour, and the Order of the Quetzal. Her collection of Fabergé eggs passed after her death to the foundation she established, and exhibited in several museums, including now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Matilda Gray Stream was the niece of Matilda Geddings Gray. She was a prominent Louisiana philanthropist, art collector, and architectural preservationist from Lake Charles.
The present lot is very likely from the same set as the gold gem-inset figure of an 'able minister' Qianlong, from the Sir Michael Oppenheimer collection, which was sold at Bonhams London, 3 November 2022, lot 129. The figure may be identified as the 'Loyal General' (忠臣), one of the 'Seven Royal Treasures' of Buddhist tradition. A related figure of a 'Loyal General', together with a jade and semi-precious stone-inlaid set of the Seven Royal Treasures on sandalwood stands, is in the Qing Court Collection, Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by E.Rawski and J.Rawson, , London, 2005, p.140, no.45. The complete group comprises the Golden Wheel, Swift Horse, White Elephant, Loyal General, Able Minister of the Treasury, Jewels of Omen and Divine Pearls. The present figure therefore belongs to this highly auspicious group of symbols of universal kingship and Buddhist sovereignty. A related altar quintet of the 'Eight Auspicious Treasures' in jewel-inlaid gold filigree, dated to the Yongzheng period, is illustrated in , Taipei, 2009, p.143.
According to the Indian Buddhist tradition, the 'Wheel-turning Sage King' (Sanskrit: ) possessed the Seven Treasures, which enabled him to rule his domain with universal authority. The concept was subsequently incorporated into Buddhist ritual and visual culture, with the Seven Treasures becoming appropriate offerings and symbols of the Buddha and of enlightened sovereignty. Their association with the idealised Sage King was particularly auspicious for the Qing Emperors, who consciously cultivated the image of the Emperor as a universal ruler and patron of Buddhism.
The use of semi-precious stones such as tourmaline and pearls set into gold represents a revival under the Qing of a luxurious goldsmithing tradition already established during the Ming dynasty. The fifteenth century saw the increasing arrival in China of precious stones and other exotic materials from Southeast Asia, India and Sri Lanka, particularly following the seven voyages of Admiral Zheng He to the 'Western Oceans'. For related Ming examples, see a gold ewer decorated with dragons and similarly gem-set, illustrated in , Philadelphia, 2018, p.97, and a rectangular gem-inset gold 'dragon' plaque, early Ming dynasty, illustrated in , London, 2014, pp.108–109, fig.98. Qing dynasty Imperial examples include a Qianlong gold gourd-shaped ewer for wine, inlaid with pearls, rubies, coral and other semi-precious stones, illustrated in , New York, 2004, p.193, no.235.
Goldwork of this exceptional quality is extremely rare in the Qing dynasty and was generally associated with commissions for the Imperial Court. Particularly relevant comparisons are two gold cups of 'Eternal Stability', circa 1739–1740 and 1740–1741, commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor for use during Chinese New Year ceremonies and now in the Wallace Collection, London (acc.nos.W113 and W112). Originally a set of four, the other two are in the Palace Museums in Beijing and Taipei. These surviving examples demonstrate the close association between highly refined goldwork and the Qing Imperial Court; see , Beijing, 2004, pp.80-81.
摩根(J.P.
Matilda Geddings Gray
可比對一件明代金嵌寶龍紋執壺,見《Philadelphia Museum of Art: Highlights of the Collection》,費城,2018年,頁97;及明初金嵌寶龍紋長方牌,見《Ming: Fifty Years that Changed China》,倫敦,2014年,頁108至109,圖98。清代御製金器例證,可比對一件乾隆金嵌寶葫蘆式酒壺,鑲珍珠、紅寶石、珊瑚等,見《Splendors of China's Forbidden City: The Glorious Reign of Emperor Qianlong》,紐約,2004年,頁193,編號235。
