Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life, is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism and closely associated with longevity, merit, and the hope of rebirth in the Western Pure Land. He is typically shown seated in meditation holding a long-life vase ( 甘露瓶), the vessel containing the nectar of Immortality.
From the late 17th century through the 18th century, Qing emperors, particularly the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong Emperors, were patrons of Tibetan Buddhism, commissioning gilt-bronze and cloisonné images for palace chapels, ritual use, and Imperial gifts. Cloisonné enamel Buddhist figures, including examples of Amitayus, were produced by the Imperial Workshops () in Beijing, which oversaw cloisonné manufacture during this period. These works are characterised by rich enamels, gilt-bronze elements, and iconography consistent with Tibetan-Buddhist models, reflecting the Qing Court's sustained engagement with Buddhist devotional art.
Compare with a related figure of a Buddhist deity in the Clague collection, first half 18th century, showcasing similar combination of cloisonné enamel technique on a gilt-bronze figure, highlighting the design details of the robe, illustrated in , Phoenix, 1980, pl.47. See also a related gilt bronze and cloisonné enamel figure of Amitayus, 18th century, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (acc.no.FE.9-1971). See also a gilt-bronze and cloisonné enamel figure of Amitayus, Qianlong, illustrated in , Taipei, 2013, p.242, fig.1.
