Late Shang/early Western Zhou Dynasty
Finely cast with intricate intaglio lines depicting mythical birds and beasts arranged in pairs, the pear-shaped body supported on a splayed high foot, decorated with a large taotie mask with protruding eyes at the center frieze below a small 'ram's head' in high relief, the domed cover similarly decorated and surmounted with a flaring knop, a single pictogram cast at the interior base and the underside of the cover, the dark gray metal with green malachite encrustations.
