Expounding on the wheel of the Dharma, this Buddha likely represents one of the Thirty-Five Buddhas of Confession. Their description is mentioned in the Sutra of Three Heaps, with the purpose of purifying those who have transgressed against the bodhisattva vow. As such, this figure would have belonged to a set of Buddhas with varying gestures. Other examples from related sets, often associated with Tashi Lhunpo monastery, include a Buddha in bhumisparsha mudra and another holding a sword (HAR 10600 & 10601).
The present work is executed in a manner inspired by the Licchavi tradition of Nepal, closely related in style to Buddha images such as the example illustrated in von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes,1981, p. 302, no. 74B. Another comparable example was sold at Bonhams, New York, 16 March 2015, lot 2.
